Nagaland’s Kitchen

For someone who took the initial dive as the only Naga food supplier in INA market 15 years back, opening a restaurant of his own comes naturally as a progressive step-up from the past. Meet Manen Longkumer the man behind the tight spaced yet successful restaurant named Nagaland’s Kitchen based in Green Park market near Uphar cinema, the man is humble enough to say that he is still learning and experimenting even after 8 long years of successful show from the same place.

The place hosts a live music band every Wednesday and caters Naga, Chinese and Thai cuisine. The reason to rely partially on cuisine other than Naga specific is because Naga food needs a very acquired taste and does not come naturally, as they use only water as a cooking medium and the pungent smell of the meat might be very disturbing for a lot of people; But the good side of this is people who like this food, become regular and have a strong return frequency.

I stuck to the Naga selection and started my order with Amrosu soup which is made from dried grounded sticky rice with the pungent Naga ginger, It felt like a warm broth soothing my throat and gearing me up for the food to come. Prawn bamboo shoot in Naga chilli were my appetizers for the day, with glistening and moist texture they are easily gonna give “a run for their money” to most of the prawn serving places in town.

Bamboo and Robu(Nagaland Yam) has always been the core of their cuisine and most of the dishes are made with the same. Chicken Robu or the chicken in dry Yam leaves is your bet if you are looking to have some country chicken with great herbs. On the other hand Smoked Eel is for those brave souls who have been liberated to try something new and chewy; with a curing of substantial time this is something that would not find many takers.

The Vegetable bamboo shoot with tofu is clearly the winning dish from here, with its silken texture and outstanding tomato curry, this is the dish you can blindly bank on.  If you didn’t like the taste of any particular thing you have the option of cleaning your board with a Bhut-Jolokia Virgin Mary, which will burn you inside out with every sip but sure has a distinguised kick to it.
