The Not So Obvious Side Of Calcutta

After the obvious I have not so obvious side of Calcutta, which is well regarded and known amongst the locals but not so well known among travelers/backpackers. Some of them have become really famous  while others are on the way. I will list my top 5 pics here, which have never let me down, in all these years.

6 Ballygunge Place

This is the go-to place if you are craving a suave Bengali meal, done with utmost care and still served in a very homely way. This is a notch above Bhojohori Manna.  Housed in a hundred-year-old bungalow decorated with pictures of old Kolkata, 6 Ballygunge Place provides the perfect ambiance for a multi course Bengali meal. The menu has been very well crafted considering the vegetarian, non-vegetarian and the fancy meal looters. The must try are the kosha mangsho,  daab chingri & nolen gurer Ice-cream.

Address: House No. 6, Ballygunge Place Rd, Ballygunge Place, Ballygunge, Kolkata, West Bengal 700019, India.

Nolen Gurer Ice Cream

The Rezala, Rogan Josh and Mussalams came from city of Calcutta and who could question the command of Sabir on Razala. The place has been standing for generations. The Rezala is what decimates everything in and around here.

Address: 3/5, Biplabi Anukai Chandra Street,Chandni Chowk, Kolkata

Sabir Hotel

China Town

This is not a restaurant but a small ghetto of all the Tibetan as well as Chinese settlers in town, the place has lot of small eateries right on the mouth of it. They whip some lip smacking Tibetan and Chinese breakfast, which gets over by 6 am.

Address: Tiretti Bazaar, Close to Park Circus

Deckers Lane

This is a strict upmarket corporate area, which somehow managed to sneak in a few carts and then the counting never stopped (you know how Indians are when it comes to food). The place sells everything from a simple Dosa, Vada to Biryani, Kathi roll and fish curry. Don’t forget to try the jhal muri, and Bengali style puchka; where the stuffing is a mix of Black Chana and Potato. Everything is made right in front of you, it’s dirt cheap and its tasty.

Bhim Chandra Nag

This name is only second to K.C. Das. Although the former steals the name and limelight for being the inventor of Rasgulla but with time people have the scope to evolve and do things in a much better way. That’s exactly what Bheem Nag does with its white sponge. One bite and its so much of nostalgia for me, that I quickly grab the second one. People even like to try the unique flavors of Sondesh they offer.

Address: 5, Nirmal Chandra St, Calcutta Medical College, Kolkata, West Bengal 700012, India.
